I have Vista ultimate 32 and I want to add a second drive that has XP already
on it. I want to add the drive and format it . I dont want to dual boot or
mess up my vist install. How do I do this? Also how do I make it my D drive
as I already have a d, e, f drive letters taken by optical and printer
drives, or how best to handle this...this is a SATA dive. thanks ,please
advise.

Install the HDD. Start Vista, Click Start Orb, type: diskmgmt.msc
Assign the letters as you like. (rightclick drives) You will probably need
to switch out to a 'holding' letter, like Z: or whatever to exchange letters
say trade D: and E: while both are in use, e.g.
d to z, e to d, z to e.

Since your Boot file does not yet have an entry for booting to XP, it will
not. You are probably going to have to 'take Ownership" of the drive and
files. (In Vista, probably the easiest way is using the 'TakeOwn' utiility
from the command line, but you might prefer the GUI. -- Properties of the
root folder, Permissions settings.)

I think once he gets it mounted here, he just quick formats it and he done.
Everything else falls into place.
