Apologies,i expect this has been covered b4..

i have an xp pro system with a single 40 gig drive a CDRW and a CD rom
drive.

I have a spare 10gig drive that id like to add just to act as a place
for ghost backup. My 40 gig drive is NTFS,the 10 GIG drive is
currently FAT. If i just plug it in and reboot will it work?, If
so,will it mess up my drive letter allocations?how can i format the 10
gig in NTFS? is there a utility i could use which i could boot from a
floppy in dos and format it?..

You should be able to connect your 10Gb HDD

Yr Motherboard should have 2 X IDE interface connectors. The C Drive [if built correctly] will be connected the the Primary or 1st IDE connector and the CD ROM or DVD to the 2nd

Make sure that you set the jumer for the 10Gb HDD as SLAVE and plug the spare plug on the CD / DVD cable into it and also the power plug

When your PC POSTS you should get into BIOS and make sure that it detects the new 10Gb HDD

Reboot and then in Windows, go START>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>COMPUTER MANAGEMENT

CLick on Disk Management and then for the 10GB HDD right click and choose Format. You can now choose NTFS.
