Adding a Network Printer

I don't mean to be critical, but I don't understand this. I am now testing
Vista RC1 Build 5728. As I have reported in the past, and have seen in
several posts you cannot add a network printer.
Why is this an issue and what is the resolution? Why hasn't someone
responded to this MAJOR problem?

Since I have added a network printer, I don't understand your question. Is
it one certain printer you can't add?

My HP 4500 set up on a print server, seems to work fine. I have to make
some manual changes when I add it, but it works.

I have a network at home and a Brother Laser Printer shared from my wife's
computer. I have no problem seeing or using that printer over the network.

Agreed, all my network printers installed and print just fine.

I'm having the same problem. My wireless laptop sees the legacy computer and
printer under 'Network and Sharing Center' but when I go to add it, it isn't
found. I'm using build 5600 on both computers.

I have a Windows 2003 Small Business Server, with an HP Laserjet 1022 shared
on it. When I go into the initial search, no printers are found. I can then
select "The printer I want isn't listed". I can then find the printer by
browsing my AD or shared printers. The system starts to connect to the
printer, then I get an error "Windows Cannot Connect to the Printer.
Operation could not be completed." Then the spooler subsystem crashes. This
happend on RC1 and build 5728.

OK, just for you Charles;), I went and set up an HP 820 on my wireless
laptop running XP. I shared it, of course, and when I used Vista 5728 to
Add a Network printer, the search found it without help. I clicked next and
the drivers were added and a test page printed.

If you can't see the printer during a scan, maybe there is something about
your setup that is keeping Vista from communicating. Maybe some type of
security setup or something in the 2003 server.

The way I have to install my printserver is to use it's IP address and the
Port number. After I enter those manually, I have to set use "RAW" and
Queue set to "LPT1" on that page.

Hope this helps,
Clark

When I try to add a printer hanging off an XP box in my workgroup, Vista
sees it but says "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access denied."
Using same acct name/pw on both boxes...

I have RC1 and have been trying to install a network printer and just get
"Windows Cannot Connect to the Printer. Operation could not be completed."
However I just got it working!!
I intalled it as a local printer. Then when asked to chose the printer port
I selected 'use an existing report' and one of the ports was the the path to
my network printer ie '\\front office\hp office (client side rendering
provider)'. I selected that and we're in business. Now I dont know (or
care!) how that how that port/path got there - whether it was from previous
XP install or if it came about by my previous attempts to add a netwrok
printer - but it is there and it works!

Congratulations. I wish I could get mine installed like that. :(

In my case the network printer is attached to an old NT4 box. Vista
(RC2/5744) is telling me that some "policy" is not allowing me to
attach to the printer.

Some one e-mailed me a note saying that I should install it as a local
printer like you've apparently done, but I can't figure out how to do
that.

If anyone out there can shed some light on this, it would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank You, Thank You. I have worked with this problem for a week or at least
20 hours and your post got my network printer going. Why Microsoft did not
address this problem is a mystery to me because I have seen this problem in
several posts. I even emailed Microsoft on numerous occasions. They take this
program away from us in six months and charge us for the final release when
we busted our a** to work out the bugs for them. Go figure.

Just got a new laptop with Vista Ultimate and had to work at it. I even
joined my current domain with server 2003 and several other XP Pro systems.
so far good until needed to add a shared printer on a XP system. I cannot get
as far as you did. I am getting Windows Explorer to be restarted or wizard
cannot be launched since access is denied. Anyone experienced this one?
