Adding a Hard Drive

Hey all, I'm trying to add a 60 gig hard drive simply as somewhere to store
media files...do I have to add it as a slave? and if so how? I plugged it in
(stupidly, seeing as I dont really know what I'm doing) and during the boot
up screen everything went black with a flashing under score in the top left
hand corner. I unplugged it and now it's back to normal.

It's a Maxtor drive, and my motherboard is ASUS and supports RAID drivers
(if that means anything to anyone)

Thanks for any help.
Alex

Hi Al,

Try it again but this time put the new drives jumper on the CS pins.
That stands for cable select. Normally your drives will figure
themselves out if you plug your main bot on the end of the ribbon and
the CS pinned slave in the middle. It's really better though if you
would run a second ribbon off your motherboard for each HD. It's OK to
run your CD and second HD from the same ribbon cable.

By the way, Ive never smoked any hardware no matter how screwed up I
plugged in the HDs and CD.

Hi again Al,

..........I forgot to connect a power cable to it.

That's how I got my first replacement hard drive for my first Acer
computer in 95. I was fooling around with things and forgot to replug
the boy back in and had beeps for the tech to hear. They sent me a new
one before I figured out how I'd messed up.
