Before I attempt to add extra RAM to my system I'd like to ask...
In what direction should I have the "notch" on the chip facing, to the
front or the rear of the CPU?
I've not found such info in my search. Would appreciate your answer.
Thanks

It'll only fit one way. >

A stubborn and heavy-handed user can, indeed, force a stick of ram in
backwards.
Afterwards they always say "well I didn't force it".

It fits one way, and you should be sure the RAM you're using is the same exact type as the one already installed. XP is very intolerant to different kinds of RAM.

True, but I figure posting beforehand for confirmation rather than afterward
for how to fix indicates a level of intelligence beyond your average
primate.

In that case, Jason, the notch fases forward. It was the easiest way in
but the system won't boot up. Type of RAM is the same. EDO chips.
Now I guess I should turn it around, It's an old machine, Win98, and
the space is cramped, and the clips holding the chip in place are not easy
to deal with. I spent a lot of time to get to where I am now. All thumbs.

Try taking the existing RAM out and installing the new RAM into its slot to
see if the new RAM is actually functional. If it works without the older RAM
in, then it is a compatability issue between the two RAM sticks. IT WILL
ONLY FIT ONE WAY. Match the notch in the bottom of the RAM to the notch in
the slot in which you are installing it. Quite a simple task.
