Hi,
I have added 256 Ram making a total of 512, but it only shows 480 on my emachine 560 running XP Home.

I thought it was a faulty ram board, so it was returned and they sent me another but this one does the same.

I have been told perhaps I should upgrade my bios but after doing a search I haven't been able to find anywhere to upgrade.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Do you know if you are "sharing memory" for your video card. This is common
on cheaper machines, and eMachines are renowned to do this. There is
nothing wrong with the practice, given enough memory.. However, it seems
too much of a coincidence to me that you have a 512MB stick of RAM (or a
pair of 256MB, whatever) and you have reported 480MB RAM.. That leaves 32MB
for video..

If you were to go into the BIOS, my bet is you can change the amount of RAM
dedicated to the video card from something like 4MB to 64MB.. Maybe more or
less.

In other words, your RAM is not missing, it is being used by something else
in your system on the hardware level.
