Running xp pro no problems with 256 meg ram. Upgraded to 1 Gig ram and now
the computer will not boot. Gets to a certain point and auto reboots or
hangs.

Possible dud memory.
Take it all out and add a memory module at a time and in various
combinations to identify the problem.

What is the motherboard? and the chipset? Do you have the
documentation on your motherboard? If so, do you know in fact it will
except that much memory? Have you upgraded to the latest BIOS for that
board? Is the memory the same as what was there originally?-assuming
that you added to the original module...
I run into this problem occasionally as I build a system and the
answer is usually in one of these or the manual that comes with the
board(and downloadable from the maker's site if it's not a proprietary
altogether system-Dell/Gateway/HP etc...)
