Does anyone have an idea of what would cause Add/Remove progs to take 9
minutes to populate?

Respectfully,

Loading all the icons from the executables. I once wrote a small app
to list all add/remove entries from the Registry, and it did so in
less than one second... because it didn't load the icons for them.

A slow CPU? A busy CPU? CPU Cycles being used? Lots of programs? Buggered
scripten.exe? The reasons behind those actions are more key but that'd be
why most likely. Malware?

1. How fast is the machine's processor?
2. How much RAM?
3. Did it always do this?
4. If the answer to #3 is "no", what changed?
5. What does a scan with a current version antivirus (not earlier than
2004) using updated definitions show?
6. Have you scanned for non-viral malware with programs like Ad-aware
and Spybot Search & Destroy?

Could be 20 things. First things to check tho is the amount of free
space you have on C: XP should have at least 10 gig free at all times.
