I'm having trouble with my A/R Programs Tool.
When I open it, it just stays blank -- it used to open up
a list of all of the programs installed on the system.

Any Help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Wes,
Thanks for the quick response.

I did the copy/paste at the Command prompt as directed --
recieved a message tha said the procedure was successful.

I then carefully checked the regisry entries and saw
nothing that looked different.

I can access A/R Tool if I do a "Help" search and then
click the 'add/remove tool' link in the search result. It
loads and works fine that way. But it still won't load
the programs if I attempt to access it through "Control
PAnel".

Any other help?
Thanks,
Don

Don;

Do a Search for: appwiz.cpl
Should be in both of these >>
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
=========

Sart | Run | Type (Or paste): control appwiz.cpl | OK

Does that open Add or Remove Programs?
==

You could create a shortcut.
Right click the Desktop | New | Shortcut |
Put: control appwiz.cpl in the location |
Next | Finish

Hi agian Wes,

I ran the search and the appwiz.cpl item only appeared in
the C:\WINDOWS\system32 -- not in the dllcache area you
noted.

Running control appwiz.cpl did bring up the AR Prog
Tool.

I went ahead and created the shortcut as you described
and that seems to work.

I tried running the scannnow sfc command and recvd an
error message 'could not find' the application.

So I guess I'm at a stalemate. I have an easy to access
A/R Prog Tool, but I'm not sure how all of this happened.

I'd like to avoid a similar, if not worse, mistake in the
future.

Thanks again for your assistamce.

Cordially,
Don

Hi Don;

When you tried to run the System File Checker, did you
have a space between the c on sfc and the / ??

sfc /scannow

There is a space between c & / !!

Just an update.......

The system file checker ran but it kept asking me to
insert my XP Home edition CD. I had/did but an error
message kept popping up that said it wasn't able to read
the CD.

I kept pushing "retry" but the same error message
retruned.

When the file checker ended I still had the same issue
with the A/R Tool.

Additionally the shortcut that I made the other day now
doesn't work.

Just seems weird..........

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks,
Don

Hi Don;

Was XP preinstalled on your machine?
Do you have a real XP CD or a recovery CD?

Start | Run | Type: C:\I386 | OK |
Do you get an Error message or does the I386 folder open?
=====================

This should open the Event Viewer.
Start | Run | Type: eventvw | OK |
Look around, see if you can find the SFC related Error message.
Get the Event ID and the Event Source if you can.
============

Using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 in a Managed Environment
Event Viewer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/xpmanaged/08_xpevt.mspx

=========

Right click the shortcut | Properties | Shortcut tab |
Find Target button
---

When you try to use the shortcut and it doesn't work and you
get an Error message, is there a Find or Fixit button?? Try it.
