When I open the Add Remove Programs icon from the Control Panel the window
opens and the list of programs display and then after approx. 5 seconds the
window just closes and I have to start it again.

I'm on Windows XP SP2.

Any ideas on why this is happening?

Thanks

do other applications behave the same way? maybe spyware? run a scan with
ad-aware or ms anti spyware or spybot search and destroy. or all of them.
spyware blaster from javacool software prevents a lot of it from even getting

Start with a thorough scan for malware. See these links:

I have resolved the problem by removing the trial application Track-it! from
Intuit.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for posting back Jeff. What alerted you to this being the
problem or was it just coincidental - you removed this program and then
discovered Add/Remove was working?

I ran Spybot and it didn't find anything so I decided to look at anything I
had installed that might possibly be suspect. I looked at Track-It only
because it was a trial version, uninstalled and no longer had the problem.
It must have something to do with the app polling for license/date
legitimacy.

Ok, thanks for posting that. Good troubleshooting.
