I'm having similar problems as others--can't add programs even though I am
logged in as the system administrator (it's a personal computer at home; I"m
the only user). Other answers to this question have said that a profile could
be "corrupt" if this happens.

Could there be other issues with this? never had a problem with XP like
this...

you mean you cannot "install" programs?

what do you mean? can you give use more specific info? what errors do you
get?

Hi Mark,

First, are they Vista-compatible programs?

If they are, then you should be able to install without further ado. If not,
then try right clicking the setup file and using 'run as administrator'.
Regardless of logging on with an administrator account, you still may need
specifically elevated privileges to install. You can only accomplish this by
using an elevated command prompt or by right clicking an .exe file (or its
shortcut) and specifically selecting it.

No, it won't let me install programs....I get the error message "you must
have admin privileges to install"

any help would be appreciated...

regards

Hi,

No, not without using one of the methods described. This is a design
limitation to prevent malware from snagging elevated privileges and
installing or running without the user's knowledge or control. It's
something Linux has done for years, and while a bit of an encumbrance it's
still a necessity.
