Add Printer Wizard fails to run

When I attempt to install a printerI get a error message saying that this is
service unavailable.
This is on a WinXpPro that had previously been installed and had the
lasser.exe problem, that is resolved, but the printer will not install.
I have uninstalled the printer and all print programs, and am looking for
some new ideas to resolve this. I should mention that this is on a Dell
machine, the modem is acting kind of weird, it would not work, so I
uninstalled it, reinstalled it and it worked, then it quit again.
I've run McAffe, (nothing found) so I guess I'll start with AdAware and the
like.....

I was hoping someone would have an idea of what tract to take....
Thanks,, Jeff

Open your Control Panel and click on the "Add Hardware" icon.
The "Add Hardware Wizard" will appear.

1. Click on Next and place a dot next to "Yes, I have already connected the hardware".
2. Click Next and scroll all the way down to "Add a new hardware device".
3. Click once to highlight it and click Next.
4. Place a dot next to "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)".
5. Click Next and scroll down to "Printers", click once to highlight and click Next.
6. Place a dot next to "Use the following port" and click Next.
7. In the "Install Printer Software Screen", on the left side scroll down to "Your Printer Make"
and click once to highlight, then in the right-side scroll down to
"Your Printer Model No.", click on it to highlight and click Next to install the software.
