Add numbered arrows to image which will automatically renumber

I am putting a large number of screen shots into a Word document (2003) and
would like to explain the features shown in each by using a numbered sequence
of arrows pointing to the individual features. Using text boxes, I can put a
letter or number on each arrow and using hyperlinks on the content of each
text box I can enable 'jump to explanation text' in the main document. Nice.
It would be even nicer if I could arrange for the numbers on the arrows to
re-number automatically if I subsequently delete from or add to the sequence,
as I anticipate that the screen shots may need to be changed frequently. Any
ideas please?

Make sure your graphics are positioned "In line with text" (on the
Layout tab of the Format Picture dialog box). After the graphic, press
ENTER to insert a new paragraph and use Insert>Reference>Caption to
add a numbered caption. Keep the graphic and the caption paragraph
together by inserting a frame around them. To insert a frame around
the selection, click the Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar.
Captions added via the Insert menu will update each time you select
the document (CTRL+A) and press F9. And you can check the "Update
fields" option on the Print tab of Tools>Options to force an update
when you print or print preveiew the document.
