Add IE7 Search Providers to standard user

I can't add a search provider to IE7 as a standard user (although I
can when logged on as an administrator or when using "Run as
administrator"). When I try, I get the following message:
-----
The search provider could not be installed.

This might have happened because:
- A required file could not be downloaded
- The website is unavailable
- You are not connected to the Internet

You might want to try again later.

Give this a try in the Standard User account, right click Internet Explorer
icon and click Run as Administrator > you should be prompted to provide
elevated priviledges, enter your Administrator credentials, after which you
should be able to add the Search providers.

Andre,

The OP already said it works when using, "Run as administrator."

I'm thinking you missed that? :-)

Just busting your chops . . .

Mic

You didn't read it well enough. ;)

The OP said 'when logged on as an administrator' not the actual command 'Run
as Administrator', two different things Michael. :)

Ehem, I'm going to try to not sound condescending here . . .

But I quote from the OP;

"I can't add a search provider to IE7 as a standard user (although I
can when logged on as an administrator or when using "Run as

" . . . or when using "Run as administrator" would be what I was pointing
out . . .

Perhaps you didn't read well enough? ;-)

I figured out how to get round the problem.

I disabled UAC and rebooted.
Then added the search providers I wanted.
Then enabled UAC and rebooted.

Clearly, this is a ridiculous fuss for what should be a simple
procedure. If Microsoft can't get one of their flagship applications
to work properly with UAC, how can they expect anyone else to? I
refuse to turn UAC off permanently as I think it's a step in the right
direction from MS but they MUST make their own products compatible
with it. Setting search providers isn't something I'd expect to
require admin rights - it should be a trivial thing that a normal user
can do.

Once again, Microsoft make life difficult for those of us who support
them.

I don't know if you're unique in this experience, but you're, so far, the
only person I've run into that has had this particular problem.

I can add and remove search providers at will, and on every Vista computer
I've looked at I've not had any problem adding or removing search providers
in IE.

Have you sent this issue to Microsoft? If they can reproduce it, they
should be able to tell you why and how to fix it, and if they discover it's
a fairly common problem they'll issue a patch as well.

I'm not sure where to send it. I mentioned it to my MS TAM at work
and asked him to find out who I could send it to but he didn't seem
particularly interested.

This problem has gone away. Norton Internet Security came with my
laptop. I've had bad experiences with previous versions in the past
but as it was already paid for I decided to keep it for the trial
period. It just expired so I uninstalled it and replaced it with
various free products (Spybot S&D, Avast! Antivirus, Comodo Firewall
Pro). I also confirmed my suspicions - I can now add Search Providers
in IE on my standard account.

I also had a problem installing the Citrix Presentation Server Client
for 32-bit Windows whilst Norton Internet Security was installed - it
didn't even work when UAC was disabled so it was even worse than the
IE problem. Since the IE problem went away when NIS was removed, I
thought I'd try Citrix again. It worked. Grrr.
