is it possible in windows xp to add a 'run' text box to my taskbar??

if you are familiar with the linux gnome gui you might know what I
mean. on my gnome desktop I have a text box on my taskbar that acts as
a command line input. I can enter a command and press enter and it will
run.

I would like the same thing for windows. it would be equivalent to
clicking Start|Run and entering the command, but the text box would be
permanently open in my taskbar. I would just have to click in the text
box rather than clicking Start|Run and having it pop up with that
window.

I'm not sure if this is possible, hence I am asking here. does anyone
know of anything like this?

hmm my response doesn't seem to have appeared.

turns out I answered my own question:

1. right click on the taskbar.
2. select 'Toolbars'.
3. select 'Address'.
4. click vertical bar near the word 'Address' and drag it until you see
the text box.

I then answered my own follow-up questions in no time:

to remove the annoying word 'Address', right click on the address
toolbar and deselect the 'Show Title' option.

to remove the redundant green 'Go' button, open Internet Options from
the control panel or from IE's 'Tools' menu. go to the 'Advanced' tab,
and under 'Browsing' deselect the "Show Go button in Address bar".

now all I need is for it to auto-clear after it executes my command.
currently the last command run remains in the address bar, which is a
little annoying. does anyone know if I can get it to auto-clear? (maybe
I will answer my own question again!)

never mind. I found the answer to my question.

yes it is possible:
1. right click on the taskbar.
2. select "Toolbars".
3. select "Address".
4. click on the vertical line by the word 'Address' and drag it until
you see the text box.

I've asked answered my own questions before, but never this fast.

although it would be nice if it were customizable -- the word 'Address'
and the green 'Go' button are rather redundant. anyone know of a way to
remove them? a registry key that can be changed? a tweak ui or
powertools configuration?

The Address bar is not quite the same thing as a Run box, but whatever
works for you.

You remove the Go button with IE-Tools-Internet-Advanced and uncheck
"Show Go button in Address Bar"

I don't know if you can ever remove the name "Address" from the
Address Bar but I don't remember the subject coming up.

Ignore my last message. I see you found the answer before you posted
this.

what exactly is the difference between the address bar and the run box?
the commands I use in the run box all seem to work in the address bar
(e.g. regedit; cmd; C:\; www.google.com; etc.).

winkey+R is ok, but I prefer the address bar, it's neat.
