One more question and I'm through for the night. When running AdAware,
laptop shows over 2500 running processes. What is a running process? Is 2500
too many? Could that have anything to do with the laptop being so slow?
Thanks again.

YEs, 2,500 indicates a serious problem.

....processes basically are applications (or parts of an application) which
run when you use your laptop/computer. 2500 processes running is
alot....(compare: I have 40 processes running). That could be one of the
problems your laptop is being slow.

Try to run your ad-aware (full scan) and DELETE all of the threads. Maybe
using a second Anti-Spyware application like Microsoft Anti-Spyware or Spybot
will do the job. Scan your system for virusses using an anti-virus
application (like Norton/McAfee/Bitdefender) and empty temp. folders (like
c:\documents&settings\"username"\local settings\temp).

To speed up your laptop, there are many little things you can do. Try google
(tune up XP/fast XP)

hope this helps.

Kathy,

I think you mean process modules, not running modules . I have no spyware &
ad-aware still shows 1,147 running modules. I'm not completely sure but I
think Ad-aware considers a running module a .dll file that is in use. But
2,500 does seem like a lot though.

hmm, could you make a print screen or export a log file and send it to my
e-mail address? Maybe than we can fix this issue

I will certainly try. This is daughters laptop and i think she needs a crash
course in maintenance. I will try to forward that right now. You all are
great. Thanks.

To all,
For the good of the newsgroup, here's a pic of my Ad-aware scan after a full
system scan. As you can see I have no spyware, 28 running processes, but
have 1,228 Process Modules running. I also use 3 other spyware apps
(PestPatrol, Spyware Dr. & Microsoft Antispyware), plus Norton Antivirus
2005 so I'm positive I have no spyware or viruses on my computer.

Drew, i just tried to email a log file to you. Don't be surprised if I
didn't do it right. Just let me know and I'll try it again. And on this
scan, the running processes was 45 and modules was 2147. Sorry. Hard to
diagnose a problem if not provided with accurate facts, huh? Thanks to
everyone again.

Kathy,

The e-mail address listed isn't active anymore. Can you resend it to:
(e-mail address removed) and I'll take a look. I'm not sure when I'll get a
chance to reply back however (to this newsgroup). Thanks.

Kathy, all anti-malware scans need to be done in safe mode.
