a couple days ago my computer was infected with ad-ware
through some program that was going through AIM. the
website had an uninstall thing on it, but it didn't work
for me. now i occasionally receive unwanted pop-ups, my
homepage for IE is changed when i restart my computer,
and the system32 folder opens on startup. for the last
problem, i tried running the script found at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (line 260,
column 2). that failed, said the registry could not be
found. i've run a couple system scans and the ad-aware
program, but am still having problems. is there a way i
can fix my computer without wiping the drive or something
of that nature? any help is appreciated.

Drew,

Spybot S&D and HijackThis (both free) are the best tools for detecting
and cleaning spyware from your system. Start from this article:
