I have a similar issue with naming a new domain and server. The current
setup is a workgroup I'll call "darwin" and I'm implementing Server 2K (AD),
and Exchange 2K. The owner has multiple business and will be adding more as
time goes on. Each business handles a certain aspect of the larger business.
The main business is named "darwin" but the business where the new domain
and server will be is called "usawater". "usawater" has a registered domain
name, but the owner and operations manager want to keep "darwin" as the
domain name. If there will be many faces to our business what is my best
move here? Can I use "darwin" for my domain name which all workstations will
join (and remote sites) or do I have to use a registered domain name? I've
setup networks before but they didn't have this issue presenting its self.
If you could reply back to (e-mail address removed) ASAP I would be
greatful. I'm under a huge time crunch now, the server has to be shipped to
HQ in 4 days. Thanks in advance for your help. Michael

or ...to make it shorter and more relavent to your
domain.....domain.local....so your netbios domain name won't be
local..it will still be domain...

Hi,

You do not need to use a registered domain. You should not use a legit
domain that you do not own. If you're going to use an unregistered domain,
do something like darwin.local for your DNS name. Don't just do "darwin".
