ActiveX security in WinXP SP2 beta

Greetings,

I recently installed WinXP SP2 Beta. I am not sure if
this is the proper forum for discussing that, so please
redirect me if it's not.

I have a bluetooth adapter connected to my computer. When
I go to Bluetooth Places, the window pops open, but I
immediately get continuous error boxes:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX
controls on this page. As a result, the page may not
display correctly.

OK, I understand the purpose of this when surfing the
internet as well as what to do to resolve it (add site to
Trusted Sites list). However, I am at a loss as to what
to do when it's something running on my system and I am
not on a webpage.

Thanks for any help offered.
 
The proper forum for discussing this, if you have a legitimate copy of SP2 Beta is in the beta newsgroups, and if you're a legitimate beta tester you should know that.

This is not longer necessarily the case. WinXP's beta SP2 is
widely available to many people who are not part of the official test,
and have not signed any Non-Disclosure Agreements. WinXP's beta SP2
is freely, easily, and legitimately available to many subscribers of
both MSDN and TechNet. I certainly don't recall signing an NDA to
receive my TechNet subscription, per se. Of course, there will be
many people frequenting this news group who cannot provide any
answers, because they are official beta-testers and did sign an NDA.

If you're an "official" beta tester, you will have been provided
information about the proper channels through which you should report
problems and seek assistance. If such is available, that should be
your first resource for assistance. That said, I realize that WinXP's
beta SP2 is widely available to many people who are not part of the
official beta test process. For instance, WinXP's beta SP2 is easily
and legitimately available to many subscribers of both MSDN and
TechNet. Of course, those of us who have obtained SP2 from either of
these sources do not have recourse to any official support; we'll have
to try to help one another.

I've encountered the same phenomenon on at least one secure site.
What I did was to modify my Custom Security Settings to Enable for
"Download signed ActiveX controls" and Prompt for "Download unsigned
ActiveX controls." I also added the sire's specific URL to the
"Trusted sites." This resulted in a prompt to install the ActiveX
control (again, as I'd visited the site repeatedly without trouble
before installed SP2). I was then able to access the site without any
further problems.

Thank you for the reply. To address to first issue, yes I
received this CD via the TechNet Plus subscription that I
have. I didn't see a beta forum to log into, but perhaps
I was not looking in the correct places.

Second, regarding the ActiveX security, I have had the
same success using the method you described to access
secure websites. However, my dilemma is opening a window
on my own computer. When Belkin's bluetooth adapter and
its associated software is installed it creates a folder-
like window that I open. It then has various places to
go, one of which is "My Bluetooth Places". Any of those
windows that I open triggers the ActiveX security protocol
and I am unable to get access to my cell phone. In fact,
the window keeps popping up and I am unable to click the
close box on the offending window because the alert box
keeps coming up.

What is the URL or zone that would be for any program
running on my computer that isn't going out to a website.
The only thing I knew to try was 127.0.0.1, but that
didn't work.

After a couple of weeks of trying, I am pretty close to
just uninstalling it because I cannot sync my phone up
with my Outlook. I do appreciate your help. If I find
anything out, I will certainly share it with this forum to
help them in possibly similar struggles.
