ActiveX controls fail to load

I'm running IE6 (v6.0.2800.1106), with all available updates, under Win98SE
on a 333MHz P2 laptop with 256MB RAM. For the past few months or so, ActiveX
controls have failed to load. For example, after attempting to check for
Office updates (office.microsoft.com), I followed all of the suggestions (ie:
ensured that ActiveX and scripting were enabled; cleared the cache; set
office.microsoft.com as a trusted site without server verification; etc.) and
still, ActiveX would not load. And, as expected, this isn't limited to this
one site; other sites have reported non-loading of their ActiveX controls.

I have searched Microsoft's support sites for help with this situation, but,
as yet, have failed to locate anything similar in nature. One article
discussed the setting of the Compatibility Flag kill-bit in the registry to
disable ActiveX controls CLSIDs (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\<clsid>). While I didn't tweak any of the
kill-bits, I was curious as to how many were set in the "kill" position: more
than half (~50) CLSID Compatibility Flags were set to "kill." Does anyone
know if this is not out of the ordinary?

I'm at somewhat of a loss here! Has anyone else experienced a similar
situation? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanx!

Hi Thom,

The kill bit is often used to block malicious or maliciously used activeX
controls (such as a . Have you run any antispyware utilities lately? They may
be setting kill bits too liberally.

I recently started using Ad-Aware SE. I've checked the log files and there
were only two adjustment to registry entries, neither of which involved the
ActiveX Compatibility Flag kill-bit. (Everything else found by Ad-Aware
consisted of tracking cookies.)

As to ActiveX controls failing to load, I previously failed to state that
IE6's Internet Security settings are all set to default Medium, with the
exception of "prompt" for font downloads. Advanced Security settings are also
default, with the exception of "empty temp folder upon closing browser."

Any thoughts?
