I am using optimum online cable. The OS is Windows XP Home which is totally
up to date. The service provider has a test to check the computer for the
feasibility of cable updates in service. When I try to run the test I am
notified that Windows XP does not recognize the authenticity of the
application refusing to run xdector.cab from cablevision in order to install
the ActiveX. I shut down the firewall, and the result is the same. What can
I do to install the Active X with Xdetector.cab?
Thanks

When you try to install the ActiveX plugin, look at the top of your
browser (Internet Explorer) for a yellow Information bar. Click on it
per the instructions and choose to install the plugin. If you aren't
using IE, then that is why you can't install the plugin. Firefox and
other browsers don't use ActiveX, which is one of the reasons why they
can be safer than IE.

Not certain, but sounds like you are using a pirated copy of XP.

If that is the case, go to eBay or Amazon and get a good copy. Both
Amazon and eBay (especially eBay ) can take legal recourse for you if
you end up with a pirated copy off their web site.

And I got a legal copy of XP Pro for $55.

I know it's authentic, because I've done a dozen downloads from
Microsoft and they checked my version of XP for "authenticity"; it is
good.

So you know, my copy does NOT contain SP 2, but you can always
download that, and you can save yourself $100.
