I have just started this new job was only suppost to be
desktop support. But the AD shut down. I know alittle
about AD but I do not remember how to restart the AD.
When you go to users and computers. There is a red x by
the AD. when you click on it, it says that AD is not
running. I right clicked on the AD and I do not see
anything on restarting the AD. Can anyone please help?

Make sure that you are on a domain controller when you are
doing this. The administrative tools could be installed on
servers that are not a domain controllers.
To verify this, go to desktop and right click on my
computer and choose properties and click on the tab
Network identification.
If the words "To rename this computer or join a domain,
click Properties" are grey and the Properties button
cannot be pressed. Then you are on a domain controller.
If you are not on a domain controller, locate it and try
there.
If you are on a domain controller, there might be one or
several services that is not started. Make sure you have
at least 200 MB of free diskspace on your system drive and
restart the server. Then look in the systemlog for further
information.
You find the eventlogs if you rightclick on My Computer on
the desktop and choose Manage.
