I have lost all the icons and the ability to right click on my desktop. I
have windows XP 2 installed. The desktop can be seen through a tool bar at
the bottom but I cannot put it on the desktop. I have tried to do a restore
- no go.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

If this is a sudden change, try a System Restore to when things worked.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time"

Type this in Start > Run
control desk.cpl,@m,0
Now click on Customize Desktop>Web tab > Uncheck all the options > Click OK
If this solves the problem, then this means you have a web page on your
desktop that has it's right click disabled.

There is nothing to uncheck here. I am sure I have a registry issue and I
cannot do a restore - tried that one.

Thanks

Tried that already. A few things changed but it is likely due to a registry
clean up program and I am unable to restore....

When you ran the 'Registry cleanup program' did you use the option to save
changes? When you say "I am unable to restore..." do you mean System
Restore? If yes, use restore from the program that hosed the desktop. And
don't use it again.
