I am looking into the idea of buying a new computer. However I am not going
to buy the monitor etc., just the computer box. However some of them are
given without Windows XP. My question is will I be able to install my store
bought copy of windows XP and activate it on this new computer without any
problems?

What type of windows xp disc is it ? Is it a Retail version ? Or OEM version
? Or an upgrade version? Retail version can be installed on any computer ...
The upgrade version can also be installed , just as long as you have a
previous version of windows ... Now OEM version can't not be or at least I
haven't heard any that can just of yet ... Which version type do you have ??

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable under
any circumstances), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is
currently on (a moot point if the first PC is dead, of course), and
install it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since
you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Well, it depends on what kind of OEM you have. If it came with a
computer, it may be tied to that computer and will not install on any
other computer. On the other hand if it is an OEM that was purchased
with "hardware", it will install on any computer. I put hardware in
quotes because OEM versions of WinXP can be purchased with minimal
hardware, just some memory, a hard drive or even a mouse.

If it was OEM, purchased with "hardware", can it be installed on
another computer if the 1st computer breaks?

Not legal per the MS license, but if it has been more than 120 days
since the last activation, then yes, it can be installed on another
computer and activated witout any problems. (It will not be a legal
installation per the MS license.)

Good luck, jimbo

No. An OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable
to another computer under any circumstances.

As I understand your answers, it can be done (as opposed to
"may be done") after 120 days via Internet just like with retail
CDs? IOW, procedurally there is no difference between a
retail CD and an OEM CD that is bought separately from a
computer?
