Some guys at work and I are having a discussion on XP
activation.

As XP has a 10 point system to determine when reactivation
is needed, does this imply that XP has to communicate
periodically with Microsoft? I recall reading that XP
needed to contact microsoft on the web every 30 days or
so, but it seems that the determination for reactivation
could be made internally by xp without need to communicate
with microsoft.

Are there requirements in XP to contact Microsoft and if
so, what are they?

That would mean that if you went on a long vacation, you'd have to
re-activate your XP when you get back. That's not the case!

Everything you need to know is in the following article:

Windows Product Activation (WPA)
on Windows XP

No. XP stores the hash of the devices checked in a file on your hard
drive. Each time it boots, it checks the hash against a hash created be
checking the devices again. If the hashes match, everything is golden. If
they don't, then it needs to re-activate.
