I recently uninstalled Windows XP Home on a computer I
purchased from Gateway (it came with XP Home
preinstalled). I didn't want XP Home on that machine, so
I uninstalled it and used the copy of XP and installed it
on another machine I own. Everything went fine. I could
download windows updates, etc. However, every time I
restart the machine, the activation icon appears in the
system tray. When I click on it it says "Windows is
already activated. Click OK to exit." I do this, but the
next time I start the machine, the same thing happens.
Please help.

Thanks,
John

You cannot install an OEM version of Windows XP
on any computer other than the one it came with. That
is why you are having the issue you described.

MMM... Ok. Now that that I've gone through the whole
installation, what's the best way to install a new copy
of XP on this system so that I can get it activated
properly? Can I use the existing installation and change
the product key in the registry when I purchase my new
license?
