I just bought a copy of XP yesterday (at Wal-mart) to put
on my kids pc (upgrade from 98) because I was told that it
was great for games (which is about all they do with that
pc). When I installed it last night, it said I had to
connect to the internet and activate within 30 days or it
wouldn't work anymore. Do you mean I have to but a mdem,
load up this pc, and take it to some ones house to connect
to the internet to make this work? What kind of deal it
that? IT DOES NOT SAY ON THE SOFTWARE PACKAGE THAT AN
INTERNET CONNECTION IS REQUIRED...and I cannot bring it
here (to work) either - even if it had a modem. Surely I
am not the only one that has had this problem!!! Does
this mean I have to return it to Wal-Mart and go back to
98?

Actually, every retail box I've looked at on the shelves does say
exactly that. But you can also activate via telephone. All you had
to do was read the instructions and prompts on the monitor.
