I just purchased a new laptop with XP Home edition pre-
installed. However, I do not have internet access in
order to activate the OS, as I am being bugged to every 10
minutes while I am on the computer. The warning says
Windows will stop working after 30 days. I only have
access to the internet via work, which uses a very
proprietary LAN. The LAN is watched carefully and
automated to block all traffic to computers not on its
list of allowed machines. Therefore, I cannot get online
to "activate" Windows. What do I do? Would I be better
with a free OS that does not require "activation"? All I
do is keep a log of activities -- I use it for trip
reports and other things, since I travel a lot.

Select the alternative option to "activate by telephone".

Sounds like you are on a work lan. Ask your I.T people to let you have
net access to activate the machine. If they won't, it's not your fault
if you can't get any work done.

Attempt to activate XP over the Internet at home. When the Activation fails
(because you have no access to the Internet), the Activation wizard will
show you a list of telephone numbers you can call. Find the one for your
geographical area from the list. It will almost always be a toll-free call.
Call it. The Activation Wizard will also show you a string of numbers. You
will have to repeat it to the support person when you call. He/she will
give you another string of numbers. Jot this string down. You will enter
the string of numbers they gave you in the Activation wizard, and if you
entered it correctly, your XP will be activated. It should only take 5
minutes at most.
