Anyone hgave the phone number to activate my copy of
Windows XP? The only instructions I can find are to use
the activation program on my computer - but before I can
get any useful information, the machine freezes up.

Why can't Microsoft put the phone number on the web site?

The number you call depends upon what country you are located in.
There are many telephone numbers.

If your machine is "freezing up", you have other issues that will not be
solved by activating Windows XP. You have a 30 day grace period before
you must activate Windows XP.

Your URL gave me this:

How to Activate Windows XP by Phone
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative and
activate Windows by phone:
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories,
point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.

-or-

Click the Windows Activation icon in the status area of
the taskbar.
Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service
representative to active Windows now.
Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy
Statement, click Back, and then click Next.
Follow the steps that are displayed in the Activate
Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next. Please
note: the number will be displayed at this point and will
differ based on the location you select.
When activation is complete and you receive the following
message, click OK.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.

BUT.... in attempting this, when I click on step to say,
Yes I want to phone a CSR, the system freezes - I don't
get a phone number. I'm in the USA, vendor can't help,
says it's a Windows problem.

Can I just uninstall XP?

Dispite what your vendor says a new computer should not
lock up during the activation process.
