acrobat reader and windows (messenger) installer

Everytime I try to open a .pdf file the windows installer starts to install
windows messenger. I don't use either of windows messenger programs
[windows/msn].

What in the world is causing this to happen?
 
Thanks for the info. I tried it, but it doesn't seem to help much with xp
home edition.
