Account selection troubles

Hello everybody.

I am currently experiencing a bug which I had never previously encountered
with Outlook 2003.

All family members have accounts in our Outlook 2003 so, before sending a
message, we use the Accounts pull-down menu to pick the relevant acocunt. It
has always worked...

....until a few weeks ago.

Now, we use the pull-down menu, put the tick in the right place and get the
relevant message "This message will be sent via (account name)".

However, no matter which account is ticked (and which account Outlook says
will be used), the email is *always* sent from the kid's email address.

Please help. I don't need to tell you how embarassing it is to send a
work-related message only to realize it was sent from a pre-teen's
"imaginative" address.

Thanks in advance,

Heri

This is indicative of the other accounts not being able to authenticate to
their respective outgoing servers. When Outloko 2003 fails to send to the
designated account, it will try the nest account in line until it finds one
that works.

LOL! One thing you should consider is to create separate Windows usernames
for each family member, yours being an Administrator account that is
password-protected and the kids' being Limited accounts, with either no
password, or a password that YOU know as well. If you give each WIndows
login its own mail profile, then each person will have exactly one account
(so you don't have to decide which to choose when sending) and any problems
can be isolated and solved without affecting any other person. Moreover,
you as Administrator will be able to check the kids' email for inappropriate
material when you wish without them being able to peruse yours.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your reply. Regarding the authentication to the outgoing server -
I've verified Account configurations, and everything seems correct. What else
could the inability to authenticate be due to?

(Nevertheless, I think I will follow your suggestion and create separate
Windows accounts.)

Thanks!

Did you check on the "Outgoing Server" tab of your account properties pages
to be sure authentication is enabled?

Yep, checked it. (And just checked again, just in case... ;o) ) The box is
ticked, and it's in accordance with the ISP's setup instructions.

Thanks for your continuing help, though!

I still advice you to create separate WIndows logins and mail profiles for
each person using the machine, but if you don't want to to this, enable
logging in Outlook (Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options) and then post the
contents of the OPMLog.log file after reproducing the problem with Outlook
sending using the wrong account. Maybe something in the log will give a
clue.
