Accidentely deleted files

I just got a new laptop with Windows XP Pro preinstalled (No CD). A few days
after first turning on the computer I installed McAfee Virus Scan from
Comcast. Even though the laptop was new I still did a scan on it and it came
back with no problems found. Shortly following the scan I started noticing
some items that were not working that use to be. The first thing I noticed
was that I can not do a Search(Start/Search). The search button is there but
when I click on it nothing happens. Next, I realized that the two little blue
TV's in the taskbar that indicate your internet connection, were missing. I
tryed going into Network Connections thinking that it got accidently turned
off but when I did there were no network connections showing. I have Comcast
Cable internet and it is still working even though no network connections are
showing. I also can no longer download Windows updates. I have tryed
performing a system restore to before the McAfee was installed but there was
no saved restore point before then.
Is there anyway to figure out which files are missing and reinstall them???

The manufacturer of your Notebook should have given you some means
to take the machine back to factory defaults, so read the manual.
Perhaps seeing how this a relatively new machine you could do that,
in future implement a backup/restore strategy and enable SR, it's not
perfect by any means, but it could have helped your current
situation.

You're gonna have problems, I suggest you get the CD.

A few days after first turning on the computer I installed McAfee Virus Scan from

There is an option somewhere in Network Connections that sets when to
display the icon (alway,s only when online, only when errors, etc.)

I have Comcast Cable internet and it is still working even though no network >connections are showing. I also can no longer download Windows updates. I have >tryed performing a system restore to before the McAfee was installed but there >was no saved restore point before then. Where they like that before you ran the scan? Or didn't you check? On the
updates section, can you access the Internet at all? Some viruses / spyware
play with the scanners and restrict access to certain sites.

The notebook is a IBM Thinkpad T22, factory refurbished. It came with no
documentation whatsoever. It had Windows XP Pro installed but it seems to be
a bootleg of it, because when I went onto Windows website to download some
items they perform a validation check and it said that my Windows could not
be validated because my key code has been used on multiple computers.

My internet is working perfectly fine, however when I go to windowsupdate.com
and I choose express update it gives me a error 0x800A0046. Windows gives
about 3 ways to attept a fix of this error of which I have tryed all and none
work. Sooo, I can not perform update.
The items that I am having a problem with were definetely not a problem
before I performed the virus scan. I actually performed a successful update

I have got the same situation. Xp pro installed on a desktop, LAN is
perfectly running, but doesn't show it's icon in the networkconnection
folder. The windows update gives 0x800a0046.
Do you have a solution already?

I just solved my problem.
Start. Right click.Properties. On the sheet "Menu start". Adjust. On the
sheet "advanced". In the scroll menu: Networkconnections show.
After this the icon showed in the folder and windowsupdate dit work without
problem
