I accidentally created a second "personal" folder root,
although there is just one "outlook.pst" file. I don't
know how I did it. I'd like to delete it - it's very
confusing. When I try to close the folder I don't want I
get "The operation failed. An object could not be
found." I deleted the mail accounts and then tried to
close the folder, but I got the same error.

You will need to go with the registry edit section.

To remove extra PST(s) from the folder list:

Outlook 97 or Outlook 98/2000 (Corporate Mode)
- On the Tools menu, click Services.
- Highlight Personal Folders service you want to
remove and click "Remove".

Note: Standalone users require 1 Personal Folders Service. Those connecting
to an Exchange server normally do not use a Personal Folders file when mail
is kept on the server.

Outlook 98/2000 (IMO [Internet Mail Only] Mode)
- On the View menu, click Folder List.
- Right click on the root folder of a folder list.
- Right click on the root of the extra set of Personal Folders
and choose "Disconnect" or "Close".

For the most stuborn of PSTs that will not remove from the folder list.

IMPORTANT: The following information contains information about editing the
registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy
of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in
the Windows folder.

- Start RegEdit (Win9x/NT) or RegEdt32 (NT).
- Navigate to:
* Win9x users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
* WinNT users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
- Look in the tree under that point (it should be full of keys with long
hexidecimal value names) and look for a section that references the PST file
you want off of your folder tree. Export that section (for safety) and then
delete it.

I can't follow your message. You say that "You will need
to go with the registry edit section", but the
instructions that follow are within Outlook, not the
registry. I'm not running Outlook 2000 in corporate
mode, but rather stand alone. There is no Services
option under tools. Thanks for your help!

well crud. at this point we can try one of two options.

1) create a new user id on your NT/2000/XP box and switch to it permanently

2) Delete the "<profile name>" folder in regedit and the "defaultprofile"

I accidentally created a second "personal" folder
root,
although there is just one "outlook.pst" file. I
don't
know how I did it. I'd like to delete it - it's
very
confusing. When I try to close the folder I don't
want
I
get "The operation failed. An object could not be
found." I deleted the mail accounts and then
tried
to
close the folder, but I got the same error.

You would have to setup your personal preferences and then copy over any
data from the old profile.

What are the implications for setting up a new user id?

well crud. at this point we can try one of two options.

1) create a new user id on your NT/2000/XP box and switch to it permanently
or

2) Delete the "<profile name>" folder in regedit and the "defaultprofile"
value under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles. Reboot. Start Outlook and then let it setup a
new profile. Will have to take steps to open your old *.pst file and set it
as the default delivery location. Restart Outlook. Remove the pst file that
doesn't contain data.

Which would you prefer to do.

I found the key, but not a pst file that I wanted to
delete. Just to be clear, I have just 1 outlook.pst
file, but 2 "Personal" folders within Outlook.

Try HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\<profile name>

I can't find "Windows Messaging" in the registry.
Under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft" (I'm using
XP) I only have "Windows","Windows Help","Windows
Media", "Windows Script","Windows NT","Windows Script
Host" as options. Thanks again for your help!!

One more time ;)

For the most stubborn of PSTs that will not remove
from
the folder list.

IMPORTANT: The following information contains
information about editing the
registry. Before you edit the registry, you should
first make a backup copy
of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both
are hidden files in
the Windows folder.

- Start RegEdit (Win9x/NT) or RegEdt32 (NT).
- Navigate to:
* Win9x users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
* WinNT users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
- Look in the tree under that point (it should be full
of keys with long
hexidecimal value names) and look for a section that
references the PST file
you want off of your folder tree. Export that section
(for safety) and then
delete it.

I can't follow your message. You say that "You will
need
to go with the registry edit section", but the
instructions that follow are within Outlook, not the
registry. I'm not running Outlook 2000 in corporate
mode, but rather stand alone. There is no Services
option under tools. Thanks for your help!

You will need to go with the registry edit section.

To remove extra PST(s) from the folder list:

Outlook 97 or Outlook 98/2000 (Corporate Mode)
- On the Tools menu, click Services.
- Highlight Personal Folders service you want to
remove and click "Remove".

Note: Standalone users require 1 Personal Folders
Service. Those connecting
to an Exchange server normally do not use a
Personal
Folders file when mail
is kept on the server.

Outlook 98/2000 (IMO [Internet Mail Only] Mode)
- On the View menu, click Folder List.
- Right click on the root folder of a folder list.
- Right click on the root of the extra set of
Personal
Folders
and choose "Disconnect" or "Close".

For the most stuborn of PSTs that will not remove
from
the folder list.

It probably would make most sense for me to create a new
