I am hoping someone can tell me if I can recover a file
that was accidentally overwritten, and if so, how is that
done?

Brad,

Unfortunately, you can't get the original file back. It is lost
forever. Perhaps you (or your systems admins) made a backup?

There's alway File > Save As > Tools > General Options >
Always create backup. Of course, it has to be done before
overwriting, and unfortunately it has to be done with each
file (contrary to the Word's system).

Does anyone know of a way to make backups the default?
Registry?

Hi Brad!

It doesn't help now but AutoSafe.xla by Jan Karel Pieterse has an
option that transfers all deleted backups that it creates to the
Recycle Bin.
