accessing websites

hello,
this is a hard one. on my other computer running xp pro i can't access any websites or ping them but the network is working fine and my broadband runs through the same network card. if i type www.google.com it can't find the page but if i type 216.239.57.99 it loads fine and will let me search but i can't follow any links out of the site.
please help
