I have a home network with 3 XP pro workstations, 1 98SE
work station and 2 XP home workstations, 3 plug into a
router, 3 plug into a switch plugged into the router. The
router connects to a cable modem. When I try to access
shared folders on the XP pro workstations from each other
it takes 10 minute or more to connect, the 98SE machine
opens the folder on the XP machines instantly. No
software firewalls, just the router hardware firewall,
all machines are configured with DHCP which is handled by
the router. I just upgraded the machines from WinME to
XPPro because the network was so flaky now it just
doesn't work. Internet access is very snappy on all
machines. Anyone have any ideas why it takes so long to
open shared folders.

Worked throught the problem with MS tech support. I had
to disable the webclient service and now all is well. To
do this start msconfig, go to the services tab and
disable webclient service, reboot and network should be
much faster. I don't know what webclient does but
everything we need on our systems appear to work fine
without it.
FINALLY!!!!
