I recently had to reinstall windows because 1 of the files was bad and i
tried to just have the windows disk just repair it it of course that was to
easy of a concept and it wouldnt repair. so i then had it do a
non-destructive reformat so that i could atlest then get all my files back
after i did it i tried to acesses my files and because i had set them to
private for once i cant access them but i can access all the others users
files. i then found a glitch that seemed to allow acess to them i could look
at all the files but none would work i could also now move the files withing
the folders and even out of the folders i also could delete them so i the got
rid of the useless one i knew contained nothing and some that i didnt need
or want anymore.

is there any way to regain access to these files?
if so then how? and if not then atleast i know i tried.

Hello,

You need to set your user account to have administrator rights and take
ownership of the file/folder. You can view this address for a guide on taking
ownership.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q308421

This would happen because the folder/file belongs to the old user name and
the old user name is identified with a unique SID (Security Identifier) even
if you rename your username you won't be able to access the files/folders.

Try the method I suggested and visit the address.

Cheers.

Hi,

Taking ownership should help:

Note this one from KB308421:

If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must
start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account
that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.
