Accessing my old user profile

I had XP on my system before, but I did a fresh
reinstallation because the a few Windows files were
missing. I had a file on my desktop before the
reinstallation, which made it reside in the "Documents
and Settings" for that user account. After reinstallation
the file is still there with the same user account name
but I cant access it, at all. What do I do????
