I have DSL modem connected directly to network port (10/100 e-net) port. I
can access internet only if I type in actual ip address such as 92.162.....
but if i type in www.yahoo.com for example, i am getting message 'oage not
found'. Worked with ISP provider help line and their reponse is 'you have
internet connectivity but your browse or other setup not correct and ou need
to work with your local techician'
I got the system fron Dell and do not have a local techinician but me. Any
help will be appreciated. Looks like I have DNS setup problem. Thanks.

Did your ISP provide you with a connection manager applet? If so, it should
have a place to enter the addresses for their DNS servers. If you are not
using a connection manager you will have to configure the DNS servers
manually for the network port used to connect your DSL Modem. First, you
must get the addresses for your DNS servers from your ISP. Goto
START/Connect to/ and select Show All Connections or Right Click on My
Nework Places on your desktop and select Properties (if it is on your
desktop). Right click on the icon for the network port used for your
internet connection and select properties. Click on Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button. If the "Obtain DNS server
address automatically" option is already selected and you are not
automatically getting the correct address from you ISP, you will need to
configure them manually. Select the Use the following DNS server addresses"
option and enter the addresses that you got from your ISP. Click OK and then
Close. Try again.

If you are running a firewall, it is possible that it is configured to block
DNS traffic.

Rich, much obliged with your detailed instuction. Will try it this evening
when back home. I do run firewall that is a part of XP (home edition). Should
I be turning that off? Microsoft recomend not to turn off. Is there some kind
of setting for firewall that I need to apply? Thanks again for your help.

You are welcome. I hope you get it working.

I am not using the XP firewall. I use Norton. I don't think the XP firewall
will block DNS traffic by default but perhaps someone else can confirm that.

Rich, thanks. Had to rerun 'setup small network' wizard again. It took care
of problem. Thank you for your help.
