I had to reinstall win xp due to some severe display problems. I installed with the no format hard drive option. The one that just replaces the win files. I choose the same screen name I had last time. But It will not let me access my music files that i had on the hard drive. It actually created new my doc folders. It created these with the root names ending with
..mastermind (the name of my computer)
example
was: johnny, All users, etc
created new: johnny.mastermind, All users.mastermin

When ever I try to access my old folder it says access is denied. I want to format and reinstall every thing, but first I need to back up this music. Any thoughts are help about this problem would be great.

Hi JD,

You need to take ownership of them. Right-click the folder, select
properties. Go to the security tab and click advanced. You can take control
of the folders on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP
Pro system, you must disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder
options/view tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and
logon as administrator. More details here:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

An additional note for WinXP Pro users: This procedure will not help you
recover data if the files are encrypted. All you will be able to do is
delete them. To recover encrypted files you will need the original
encryption certificate or a Recovery Agent from the installation under which
they were encrypted. Without one of these, the files are not recoverable.

Next time, do a repair install. This will preserve programs, data, settings,
and user profiles. Instructions can be found here:

Log in as Administrator and take control of the folder

i need to access a file everytiem i try it says access is denied. i followed you r steps to own the folder..but when i click on properties there is no security tab... what should i do?

Hi,

Follow the steps that I already listed. If the sharing tab does not show,
then how you access it depends on your system. For Pro, disable simple file
sharing, for Home you must restart in Safe mode and logon as administrator.
