Accessing email from other computers in lan

I have just purchased a new laptop that will be used mostly in my house. I
have a wireless network set up, but I would like to access the same email
from my laptop, but the outlook data file is on my desktop computer. I would
like to use my desktop mostly as a server for all my files including my
email. Is there a way I can access my email anywhere in my lan, but with the
outlook data file on the desktop? And I would also like to be able to access
the file while I am away from my lan, but if I am not able to do that I can
live with that.

Thanks,
Brian Mullins

Hi Brian,

I had the same issue, and am delighted with a product called Public
Outlook from: http://www.outlookstore.com

There is a free trial version available that works only in four hour
chunks.

All the best,

Your .pst file for Outlook can be located anywhere on your network. In your
account settings, you will need to add the data file where it is located on
the other computer.

That is the easy part.

What you have to do first, is make sure you have your computers networked
together correctly in the same workgroup and that you "Share" the hard drive
of your desktop computer so you can access the data files from the laptop.
Then you can point Outlook to the .pst file located on the desktop computer.

Would I be able to do everthing that I do on the computer with the pst file?
and also can have outlook running on both computers at once?

No you cannot have two instances of OL accessing a single pst.
MS doesnt support the use of a pst over a network, it can lead to
corruption.

Actually, to be factually correct, Microsoft does not support *multiple
accesses* to the .pst file, Network access works fine from one client, just
not multiple instances of Outlook at the same time. Microsoft frowns on
this, but it is not an unsupported configuration.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, DL asked:

It could be done, but would be quite slow over the Net. It is probably
just as easy to copy it to the laptop and chnage the settings and copy
back toLan when you get back, also changing the settings again.

Please remove obvious from email address if emailing.

Hi again Brian,

The Public Outlook program that I suggested earlier comes with a free
addition called Public Synch that does just what you need.

All the best,
