I've created a hidden shared file and mapped it on my computer. I need to
have someone else on the network use this file as well so do I have to map
that drive on their computer also or should they be able to access it from
browsing the network?

Thanks.

Meaning, a hidden share?

I'm not sure what you're 'mapping' to access a folder on your own computer.

They won't be able to browse it, because it's a hidden share. That's the
reason one creates hidden shares - to prevent browsing! However, if you have
given them the appropriate permissions, they can use
\\computername\hiddenshare$\ and open it that way.

If it's a hidden share, they will have to map it manually. The browser won't
enumerate a hidden share, that's why it's called a hidden share.

Or is the file itself hidden? If the file is hidden, the share that it's in may
be visible (if not a hidden share).

Thanks gentlemen for your responses! Chuck, I think you have answered my
question and I'm sorry if I was unclear about something in my message but I
created a folder and made it a hidden share instead of the just having the
file inside it a hidden share. I was just trying to confirm if I had to map
it on his computer and it looks like I do. I followed the instructions at
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm but it was a
little confusing to me.

Thanks again.
