My windows xp was working fairly well for the past three
days that it has been on, then i turned the power off for
last night, and after it booted up there was no welcome
screen at all, only a windows-2000 style logon box! there
are 6 accounts because we are a family that uses the same
pc, but now we only have access to my father's account.
only his admin. name and password work at this 'windows
2000' logon prompt. whenever the computer is restarted or
logged off now, or even 'switching users', it just goes
back to that dratted prompt! we made sure that the welcome
screen is enabled under the user account settings, but
there isn't really anything else we can think of to solve
this. Can any of you offer help on how to let us choose
our own user accounts again?!?!

Hello,

Just out of interest, were all the affected accounts
protected with a strong password?In other words,not a
dictionary word?Something more random and akin to
8^&ned_p£4##je%?
Or just your Fathers?

Sadie

There are six accounts (plus a disabled guest account). my
father's and my mother's both are the only ones with
passwords, and though they probably don't use dictionary
words (more likely a name or such), i know they don't use a
weird random set of letters/numbers/symbols..

...does this info make a difference?

I was just thinking allowed and by no means wish to alarm
you. There are a vast number of worms/bots etc that
propogate seeking computer accounts with weak/no
passwords,that's all.
Equally, someone might just've altered the logon screen to
classic without realising what they'd done.Try changing
the display settings from the control panel first,if
you'd rather. If you find any set to "Classic",just change
em back to "XP"..voila!

There are other explanations,so please don't become
unduly distressed.Enable the inbuilt XP firewall:

Then go run a free online scan at one or more of the
locations below:

Trend:
http://housecall.antivirus.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

McAfee:
http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Handy piece of kit:

Stinger (Best saved to
floppy):

stinger:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

It's not going to do any harm to run a scan supplemental
to the AV/Trojan/Spyware scanning programmes installed on
your O.S.

Understand,we can't see your computer-it's a case of
eliminating possibilities.

Heh, how embarassing.. it turns out that we could always
simply enter our account name and password (or lack
thereof) at that strange logon screen, and it works! it's
basically an alternative to the 'welcome' screen. i'm
looking around in control panel now to see if i can set
things from classic to XP styles now. Thank you for your
advice!

*aloud*
