Does anyone have any idea as to why my otherwise well behaved PC drop
its internet connection when left idle for a shorttime ? Sit at th
keyboard all day and stay online all day no problem. leave it for a fe
minutes and.... a reset is required.
Setup:
Broadband modem router (adsl)
to 5 port switch
ethernet to 2 PCs (xp pro) 1 Laptop (xp home)
all machines have the same settings for power saving(inc networ
adaptor etc) bringing machine out of standby etc, internet connection
are identical yet this main (not internet sharing) machine seems unabl
to connect again without a reboot. Have checked settings for firewal
etc. All PCs are well maintained with firewall, virus checkers, an
spyware pop up blockers ,are regularly cleaned of temp files an
defragged etc.
Can find no logical reason for this PCs behaviour.
Oh one other thing, I can still connect to the hardware in my Mode
/router and access all the info therein and the diagnostics in th
modem show I am still connected to my ISP with a good connection(th
other PCs will connect irrespective to the behaviour of this one)

Assuming these are all wired connections (not wireless), it may just be
the driver you are using for your network card in that computer. Check
the motherboard maker's website for the appropraite drivers.

What kind of ADSL modem is it? USB or Ethernet? If USB then there may
be a USB driver or Power setting. May be a regular ping is needed to
keep it 'alive'? See modem manual.
