Access 2000 w/SR1 on windows XP - shared db working until now - Access shuts
down completely w/o any warnings or errors. It does this in the current DB
and when I try to create a new DB so I believe the problem is within access
itself and not within any corrupt DB file.

When I tried to run fix & repair within Access, I get Windows Installer
dialog stating "The installation package could not be opened...."

Any idea what went wrong and how to fix it?

Have you tried working on the database from another computer? If it shuts
down there also it's very likely not the computer's fault (discounting MS
installing another buggy Windows release).

I'm betting that it's a corruption issue. Compact and Repair only fixes a
select few problems. Below are some resourse on Access corruption issues.

Tony Toews has an excellent web page on database corruption.

Allen Brown also has excellent info on corruption.

I have a white paper in a Word document named Fix Corrupt Access Database
towards the bottom this page:

Fix (Detect) and Repair on the Help Menu is not the same and Compact and
Repair. Sounds like you need to reinstall the software.
