Hi, I use MS Excel to create and maintain quite a few tournament tables for
chess. In Excel I am having a problem getting the tables sorted by player
results, these can easily be ranked but the individual match results tend to
get mixed up.

Is it possible to use MS Access to create tournament tables and get them
sorted by player points whilst maintaining the correct match results for
each player?. If so can someone point me towards a useful related web site
or similar where I can learn a little more?

Many thanks,
Mickey

Sorry, but I don't know what a "tournament table" is. What kind of data
comprises a tournament table? What kind of calculations are required?

Access is great at handling large volumes of data. Excel is great for
examining that data.

I am going to guess that either can do what you need and that Access may
do it a little easier based on the volume and ease of use AFTER you have the
database set up.

Warning Access does have a rather steep learning curve. Getting started
is not easy. It can be done, but it is a humbling experience. It will keep
you humble as well. It seems no one ever becomes fully knowledgeable of it.

Hi Joseph,
Thank you for your response. The tournament table is a results table such
as a football league table. The difference being that individual match
results are also shown at the same time as points scored. An example can be
seen at
http://bfcc-online.org.uk/files/tourneys/memorials/mitchell/mitchell.htm

I have been searching the web for a template but have not found anything
yet. I am temporarily using a shareware program but this is a little
temperamental.

Cheers,
Mickey

When you sort in Excel, it's important to highlight all of the columns you
want re-arranged before you apply the sort.
My guess is that you'll find it easier to learn and apply that principle
than to master Access.

If it is only one table or just a few tables less than a hundred or two
players and you don't want to access the data for some sort of combined
annual result, I would stick with Excel, and I am not an Excel wiz. I have
my girlfriend do all that stuff.

Read the help file on sorting in Excel. There are several ways of doing
it and you have to be careful about what columns are included in the sort
and what column(s) are used as sort criteria. After you do it a couple of
times, it will make sense and be easy. Once you get one sorted the way you
want, consider saving it after deleting the data for future use. You can
even use a tab for each tenement for the season.

Hi,
Mmm, not sure about this. Excel only offers the option to sort on 4
columns, therefore I can sort by Points Scored and by up to threeplayers but
Excel does not then maintain the individual match results correctly.

This really belongs in an Excel newsgroup, but how about showing us an
example of the raw data and it sorted as best you can and sorted as you
wish. I suspect you can do what you want in Excel.

Hi Joseph,
Thx for the reply again, I will see what I can find out at the Excel
newsgroup as you suggest. Rather than post an attachment it is probably
best if Igive you a link to a table of the type I am using -
http://bfcc-online.org.uk/files/bfccopen/semis/s112.htm whilst a 'sorted'
table can be found at
http://bfcc-online.org.uk/files/tourneys/memorials/mitchell/mitchell.htm

(Right click on the first table to download into Excel)

To be fair I do not expect you to trouble with this any longer and I do
thank you for your help. I see a lot of Excel tableson the web for chess
resutls and none are using sorted tables, theonly place I see sorted tables
is a site whose tables are in a .NET setup, hence the database soloution.

I would go with Excel. The only issue there should be the "=" sign and
I would guess that Excel will have a way of writing a formula for the total
column converting the " = " to a 0.5 .

Good Luck
