I have a PIV 3.0 GHZ with 2 GB of RAM running on Win XP Pro and Office XP Pro
but cannot compact and repair databases. It just hangs up. It creates the
DB1 file but will not go any further.
Does anyone know of other software conflicts that night be causing this. I
have uninstalled Office and reinstalled but it makes not difference.

One possible problem is your XP folder permissions. You must have
*full* Read, Write, Create and Delete permissions on the folder
containing the database for this to work.

You might also have some sort of corruption which is blocking the
compact (yes, I know, it's compact *and repair* but it doesn't always
work!)

Try creating a new, empty database and using File... Get External
Data... Import to import everything from this database. This will
actually compact it more thoroughly than just Compact, and if you've
been doing heavy development it may be worthwhile. If there is a
corrupt object it will fail to import; you can then import it from a
backup copy of the database or recreate it.

Thanks but I know it's not a problem with the file. I can compact it on
another machine. What I was looking for if anyone elese has had a similar
problem and was fixed by removing some other software or a hardware problem.

If you've doublechecked your Permissions on the folder containing the
file, then I don't have anything else to suggest! Sorry!
