Always quote error messages exactly, without paraphrasing. Always give some
information about your computer - operating system (Pro, Home, MCE),
service pack level, whether this is a domain member or standalone/Workgroup
PC, etc.

Looking into my Crystal Ball(tm), I see these possibilities:

1. You are trying to change startup settings using msconfig and get an
"access denied" error after you click Apply. If this is correct, do you
have an HP printer? If yes, this is a known issue and the changes get made
anyway so you can ignore the message.

2. Or you have security software running that is preventing you from making
changes to Startup.

3. Or your computer is infected and the malware is preventing you from
making changes to Startup.

4. Or your computer is a domain-member workstation and you don't have
authority to make the changes.

More details from you will help narrow down the troubleshooting.

Thanks for the super fast response.I have been bringing up my computer after
a re-install and been putting programs back gradually. The last program I
installed was the drivers for the HP Photosmart C6180. So you hit ht nail on
the head! have now dumped th drivers and will re-install them later.
Any words of wisdom or is this just something you live with if you have an
YP Printer?
Thank you very much.

There may be an HP workaround, but I don't know it. You can ignore it or
end-run around it. When I want to manage a computer's Startup, I don't
bother with the System Configuration Utility. I go directly to the
HKEY_CurrentUser and HKEY_LocalMachine Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current
Version>Run keys in the registry. I manage services by doing
Start>Run>services.msc [enter].

If you're not comfortable working in the registry, see if AutoRuns (free)
works for you.
