I just started using Avast and it identified viruses in 4 files:

C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0200229.CPY
C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0200230.CPY
C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0200231.CPY
C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0200232.CPY

No matter what action I told Avast to do, it said that access to these
files was denied. Is there a way to remove the virus from these
files?

Turn your system_restore off, restart the machine and turn it back on.

Disable system restore and do another scan.

I was assuming that, in the new scan, I'd have to do something to
remove the viruses. But I disabled system restore and did another
scan, which showed no viruses, then reenabled system restore and did
another scan, which also showed no viruses. Are the viruses really
gone without my having to do anything?

When you disabled System Restore, it deleted all of the old files in
restore, including the viruses.

yes, disabling the system restore flushes the contents... the 'viruses'
you found were in the system restore and so they got flushed...
