using xp home, dell desktop, 5 mos old. have 3 users with admin privileges.
unable to explore one user's cookies, desktop, & favorites folders from
explore all users, unless i'm signed onto that user. i receive an access
denied advisory box. the other users explore each other with no problem.

i logged onto the user that i cannot explore. went to explore, & viewed each
folder: cookies, desktop & favorites' properties-sharing tab, & the item
"make this a private folder" is checked, but greyed so it cannot be toggled
on/off. at one time this user had a password, but has since removed it. is
there a way to uncheck the "make this a private folder" in those 3 folders,
so i can explore them from the other user accounts?

than you, len kiesling

Hi Len,

In WinXP Home systems, you can only access the security settings by logging
on as administrator in Safe mode. You will need to change the permissions on
those folders. By design, XP does not share the user profile folders.

XP

thank you for reply! i will follow your direction & kb article. i'm
presently on my old 98se. i will post back my results when completed. thank
you, len kiesling

went into safe mode-administrator-start-explore all users-user #3-desktop
folder-properties-security tab. upon selecting the security tab, an advisory
box states: "you do not have permissions to view or edit current permission
settings on desktop, but you can take ownership or change auditing
settings." how do you take ownership?

also, after ok'ing the advisory box, security tab views. under
advanced-owner, it states "unable to display current owner". when i go to
the other 2 users' desktop folder's properties-security-advanced-owner, it
dislays the name of the user. i'm a bit confused. can you help? thank you,
len kiesling

Hi,

Taking ownership: Right-click the folder, click properties. On the security
tab click advanced, go to the owner tab. Select your current logon (should
be admin at this point), click apply/ok. With XP Home, this must be done in
Safe mode as well.

thanks for reply! followed steps, went to owner tab, selected
"administrator". there was also "administrators". still get access denied
advisory when attempting to view desktop folder in user #3, from explore all
users. i can only view this folder if i'm logged onto user #3.

the other 2 users show 3 names on the security tab, under "group or user
name". they are: administrators, user #2 (or user #1) & system. user #3's
security tab shows only 2. user #3 & system. it seems i have to add a user.
i have read the kb article #308418 several times. i must be missing, (not
understanding) something. any help greatly appreciated! thank you, len
kiesling.

(ps: for some reason i'm having trouble receiving replies to my news posts,
so i subscribed to this newsgroup with my other 2 accounts. i have 3
accounts total: msnews.microsoft.com, msnnews.msn.com, & news.optonline.net.
i did this so, i could get the replies. if it's ok, could send me a direct
reply in addition to the newsgroup? i would really appreciate it! thanks,
len)
